The President of Longines, Walter von Känel, knows the crucial value of time.... especially when it's broken down into fractions of a second. "You only have to mention Kitzbühel in 1978, where the Austrian skier Josef Wallcher and Sepp Ferstl from Germany tied exactly to one hundredth of a second upon crossing the finish line of the famous Streif... a feat measured by Longines." To mark the 2014/2015 alpine skiing season Longines launched the Conquest 1/100th Alpine Skiing. Powered by the latest generation of quartz movements, developed exclusively for Longines by ETA, the watches in the Conquest 1/100th series are constructed entirely with the demands of athletes and sports professionals in focus. Time is measured at multiple intermediaries and displayed in analogue, with an extra hand showing the time to one hundredth of a second. Longines made its debut in the alpine skiing world in Chamonix, 1933, making their first quartz chronograph in 1956. Fifty-nine years on and the products are as durable, accurate and reliable as consumers have come to expect from the brand. The aforementioned new quartz movement, the L440, features a microcontroller with a flash memory, allowing the wearer to instantly reset and record split times. It's a substantial size but not too clunky, measuring in at 41mm, and the shiny polished steel contrasts handsomely with the pitch-black dial. For the most advanced skiers out there, it's the red hand that will count here - this is the key hand measuring time to one hundredth of a second. Mounted on a steel strap with a triple safety folding clasp, this watch can take the pace.
